EFFECT OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFA (ROSELLE) AND VITAMIN C ON LEAD ACETATE INDUCED LIVER DAMAGE IN SWISS MICE

Abstract

Lead toxicity is a major public health concern worldwide, as it can induce oxidative stress and damage multiple organs, including the liver. Hibiscus sabdariffa, known for its antioxidant properties, and vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, have been shown to mitigate the effects of oxidative stress in various tissues. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract and vitamin C on liver profile parameters in Swiss albino mice exposed to short-term lead acetate toxicity. Both sex Swiss albino mice were randomly divided into five groups: Control, Lead acetate (250 mg/kg body weight), Hibiscus sabdariffa extract (200 mg/kg body weight), Vitamin C (150mg/kg body weight), and Hibiscus sabdariffa extract. The mice were treated daily for 21 days. At the end of the treatment period, blood samples were collected to analyze liver profile parameters, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels. The results showed that lead acetate exposure significantly increased the levels of ALT, and AST compared to the control group. However, co-treatment with Hibiscus sabdariffa extract and vitamin C attenuated these elevations, with the co-treatment group showing significant reductions in liver profile parameters compared to the lead acetate group. Hibiscus sabdariffa extract and vitamin C co-treatment exerted hepatoprotective effects against lead acetate-induced liver damage in Swiss albino mice by attenuating oxidative stress and maintaining liver profile parameters within normal ranges. These findings suggest the potential of combining Hibiscus sabdariffa extract and vitamin C as a natural therapeutic strategy for mitigating liver damage caused by lead toxicity
