Abstract

This study investigated the influence of parental socio-economic background on the career choice of secondary school students in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The population consisted of senior secondary school students (SS2 and SS3) in public secondary schools within the area. A sample of 300 students was selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. A structured questionnaire titled “Parental Socio-Economic Background and Career Choice Questionnaire” (PSEBCCQ) with a reliability coefficient of 0.81 (Cronbach Alpha) was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test and ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that parental education, occupation, and income levels significantly influence students’ career choices. Students from higher socio-economic backgrounds tended to aspire for professional careers like medicine, law, and engineering, while those from lower backgrounds leaned towards teaching, business, or vocational trades. Recommendations include the need for career counseling in schools and parental awareness programs.
