Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in promoting government transparency in Nigeria, focusing on their strategies, impact, and challenges. Using a descriptive survey design, data was collected from 125 respondents across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, with particular emphasis on Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The study employed questionnaires and chi-square analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of CSO interventions in fostering accountability and reducing corruption. Key findings reveal that Nigerian CSOs utilize diverse strategies, including advocacy campaigns. The study, hereby recommends that government should strengthen legal protections for CSOs and whistleblowers to ensure transparency advocacy can occur without fear of repression; CSOs should increase collaboration with media, academia, and international partners to broaden the reach and impact of transparency campaigns.
