Abstract

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the protective effects of methanolic extract of Zingiber officinale (ginger) rhizomes on liver, kidney, and heart function in alloxan-induced diabetic male Wistar albino rats. Fresh ginger rhizomes were sourced from Owode Market, Offa, Nigeria, authenticated at the University of Ilorin, washed, air-dried, powdered, and extracted with methanol (1:5 w/v) for 48 h. The extract was concentrated via rotary evaporation and administered orally at 200 mg/kg body weight daily for 7 days. Twenty rats (160–200 g) were acclimatized for 14 days, then randomly divided into three groups (n=5–6): Normal Control (NC, distilled water), Induced-Untreated (IU, alloxan 180 mg/kg i.p.), and Induced-Treated (IT, alloxan + extract). Diabetes was confirmed 72 h post-alloxan by fasting blood glucose >7.0 mmol/L. Biochemical analyses revealed that ginger treatment significantly lowered serum creatinine (∼0.5 vs. 1.5–2.0 mmol/µL in NC/IU; p
