Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: This research work will give detailed analyses of the common hysterosalpingographic and ultrasound findings in patients presenting with infertility and relate the findings with their clinical indications and age distributions. It will elucidate the prevalence of occurrence of the major common findings of these infertility screenings. Objectives: The objective of the study is to evaluate the common radiographic and ultrasound findings in patient with infertility using HSG and ultrasound scan Methodology: Retrospective, non-experimental study that was carried out using folders and radiological reports of patients referred for hysterosalpingography and ultrasound scan with a provisional diagnosis of infertility. This research includes patient referred from January 2023 - January 2024. Results: Patients on the age group of 20 – 24years are referred to only one of the screening tools while patients of 45 – 49years age group are often referred to undergo both screening for infertility evaluation. The commonest reason for referral of patients with infertility for both ultrasound and HSG evaluation was secondary infertility. The commonest age group of patient with infertility referred for both ultrasound and HSG evaluation was 30 – 34years and 35 – 39years respectively. The commonest ultrasound diagnosis in patients with infertility was uterine leiomyoma and has no significant difference in the proportion of its occurrence in each of the groupings of infertility. Tubal blockage occurred mostly in secondary infertility with bilateral tubal blockage being predominant. None of the patients within the age group of 20 – 24 years referred for ultrasound had uterine leiomyoma and ovarian cyst. The least ultrasound diagnosis in patients with infertility was uterine endometriosis. Conclusion: It showed that the commonest reason for referral of patients with infertility for both ultrasound and HSG evaluation was secondary infertility and the commonest age group of patient with infertility referred for both ultrasound and HSG evaluation was 30 – 34years and 35 – 39years respectively.
