INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT GRADUATES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION HAVE ON THE TEACHING OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN LAPAI, NIGER STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of graduates of Physical Education on the teaching of Physical
Education in secondary schools within Lapai, Niger State. Physical Education is an essential
component of the school curriculum, aimed at promoting physical fitness, mental alertness,
social development, and lifelong health habits among students. The effectiveness of its teaching,
however, is largely dependent on the professional competence and pedagogical skills of teachers
who handle the subject. This research examines how graduates of Physical Education influence
the quality of instructional delivery, curriculum implementation, and student participation in
physical activities. A descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. Data were
collected from Physical Education teachers and students across selected secondary schools in
Lapai through structured questionnaires and interviews. The data were analyzed using frequency
counts and percentages to determine patterns and draw conclusions. Findings revealed that the
presence of qualified graduates of Physical Education significantly enhances students’
engagement, promotes effective instructional strategies, and leads to better academic and
physical outcomes compared to when the subject is taught by non-specialist teachers. However,
the study also identified persistent challenges, including inadequate teaching facilities,
insufficient instructional materials, and the low prioritization of Physical Education in school
policies. The study concludes that graduates of Physical Education play a critical role in
ensuring the effective teaching and learning of the subject at the secondary school level. It
recommends that schools should prioritize the recruitment of qualified Physical Education
graduates, provide adequate infrastructure and instructional resources, and support continuous
professional development to strengthen teaching effectiveness in Lapai, Niger State.
