Abstract

This project presents the design and construction of a solar-powered water pumping station intended to provide a reliable and sustainable water supply solution for the Petroleum training institute boys’ and girls’ hostels. The system harnesses photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity, which powers a 1 HP DC Submersible pump. The pump lifts water from a borehole to a 10,000-litre tank, ensuring adequate daily supply. The design was based on a solar irradiance level of 618 w/m2, a system efficiency of 70% and a daily water demand of 0.3 L/hr. Testing confirmed that the system delivers sufficient water under varying sunlight conditions while minimizing operational costs and environment impact. The results demonstrate that solar powered water pumping is an efficient and eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel or grid-powered systems, with potential applications in rural communities, farms and institutions.
