Abstract

ABSTRACT This study explores the influence of parental economic status o n pupil academic performance i n Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. Education is a critical determinant of individual and societal progress, and understanding the factors affecting academic performance is essential for developing effective educational policies. This research aims to examine how various dimensions of parental economic status, including income level, employment stability, and educational background, impact the academic outcomes o f pupils i n primary schools. Employing a descriptive survey design, the study utilizes a structured questionnaire t o collect data from teachers in selected primary schools within the region. A sample o f 200 teachers was surveyed t o gather insights into the academic performance of their pupils, correlating this data with the economic conditions o f their families. Statistical analysis methods, including correlation and regression analyses, were used to interpret the data and identify significant relationships. The findings reveal that pupils from families with higher economic status generally exhibit better academic performance compared to their counterparts from lower-income households. Factors such a s access t o educational resources, a conducive learning environment at home, and parental involvement in education were found t o be positively correlated with academic success. Conversely, pupils from economically disadvantaged backgrounds often struggle due t o limited access to learning materials, inadequate parental support, and environmental challenges that hinder their educational progress. This study underscores the necessity o f addressing the educational disparities stemming from economic inequality. It advocates for targeted interventions, such a s community support programs and government policies aimed at improving the economic conditions of families, to enhance educational opportunities for all pupils. The research contributes t o the existing literature on educational equity and offers insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders i n fostering a more equitable educational landscape in Akoko North East.
