Abstract

This project presents the design and construction of a heart rate monitoring system using a pulse sensor. The aim of the project is to develop a low-cost, portable, and efficient device capable of measuring and monitoring the human heart rate in real time. Heart rate monitoring is an important aspect of healthcare and fitness management, as it helps in assessing the overall condition of the cardiovascular system and detecting possible abnormalities at an early stage. The system operates using a pulse sensor based on the principle of photoplethysmography (PPG), a non-invasive optical technique used to detect blood volume changes in the microvascular bed of tissue. The pulse sensor emits light into the skin and measures the amount of light reflected back, which varies according to the blood flow caused by each heartbeat. These variations are captured as electrical signals by the sensor. The detected signals are transmitted to a microcontroller, which processes and analyzes the data to calculate the heart rate in beats per minute (BPM). The processed results are then displayed on a liquid crystal display (LCD) to allow the user to easily read and monitor the heart rate. In addition, the system can be configured to transmit the data wirelessly for remote monitoring purposes, enabling healthcare providers or caregivers to track a patient’s heart condition from a distance. The developed heart rate monitoring system is designed to be accurate, energy-efficient, portable, and user-friendly. It provides a reliable and convenient method for continuous heart rate monitoring without the need for complex medical equipment. This makes the system suitable for various applications, including patient health monitoring, fitness tracking, sports training, and early detection of cardiovascular irregularities. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how modern sensing and microcontroller technologies can be integrated to create an affordable and effective biomedical monitoring device.
