ASSESSMENT OF HEAVY METALS IN DRY CLARIAS GARIEPINUS FROM ITU RIVER
Abstract
Assessment of heavy metals in dry Clarias gariepinus from Itu River was carried out using standard analytical procedures. The results revealed copper, chromium, zinc, cadmium and lead; 3.413+0.009 mg/kg, 1.528+0.011 mg/kg, 1.196+0.048 mg/kg, 0.824+0.004 mg/kg and 0.055+0.003 mg/kg for Sample A and 2.053+0.060 mg/kg, 0.587+0.016 mg/kg, 1.178+0.214 mg/kg, 0.976+0.028 mg/kg and 0.748+0.022 mg/kg Sample B respectively. The heavy metals investigated in the dry catfish were above the recommended maximum permissible limits of WHO except copper and zinc. Therefore, regular monitoring of heavy metals in fish, alongside improved environmental and processing controls, is essential to safeguard public health.
