Abstract

This study investigates the impact of parental involvement on the career development of university students in Nigeria. Career development is a critical aspect of students’ transition from university to the labor market, yet parental influence remains understudied in the Nigerian context. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. A sample of 300 undergraduate students from 3 universities in Nigeria was selected using stratified random sampling. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire titled “Parental Involvement and Career Development Questionnaire” (PICDQ). Data analysis was done using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Findings revealed that parental involvement in career decision-making, financial support, and emotional encouragement significantly influences students’ career choice, self-efficacy, and career planning. The study concludes that active and supportive parental involvement enhances positive career development outcomes. It recommends that universities should organize career counseling programs that include parents to equip them with current labor market information.
