TRACE METAL BIOACCUMULATION IN DIFFERENT SPECIES OF TILAPIA IN QUA IBOE RIVER MIDDLE COURSE, IKOT EKPENE
Abstract
This study on trace metal bioaccumulation in different species of Tilapia species in Qua Iboe River middle course Ikot Ekpene was carried out using standard analytical methods. Three Tilapia species were used for the study which were: T. galelea, T. niloficus and Oreochromis sp. The result of the study revealed the bioaccumulation of trace metal in the following sequence: T. galelea sample Zn >Ni>Pb>Cr>CD while the trace metal concentrations of the T. niloficus samples had the following sequence: Zn>Pb>Ni>Cr>Cd and that of the Oreochromis sp sample was in the following sequence, Zn>Ni>Pb>Cr>Cd. However, all the fish samples had the mean heavy metal concentrations within the WHO permissible limit. Thus, indicating that they are in good condition for consumption and void of trace metal toxicity on human consumption. However, it was recommended that continuous monitoring of the fish species and the aquatic environment is inevitable to ensure good water quality, aquatic food safety and continuous compliance with standard.
