LEAF AND PETIOLE ANATOMY OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA (L) MALVACEAE OBTAINED FROM UNIVERSITY OF UYO PHARMACOGNOSY GARDEN
Abstract
The study investigated the leaf and petiole anatomy of Hibiscus sabdariffa using standard biological methods. The result showed the shape of epidermal cell was irregulars on both adaxial and abaxial surface. Anticlinal wall pattern was undulate on the adaxial surface while it was undulate and sinous anisocytic on both abaxial surface. Stomatal distribution was amphistomatic on both surface. Stomata type was anisocytic on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces and trichomes were absent on both surfaces. The number of stomata and adaxial surface was 24 while that of abaxial surface was 45. The qualitative analysis shows that values for length of epidermal cell, width of epidermal, length of stomata and length guard cell were higher on abaxial surface (98.90 + 6.16, 32.56 + 3.92, 34.05 + 3.05 and 18.58 + 2.59) respectively while width of stomata and width of guard cell were higher on the adaxial surface (18.78 + 2.91 and 6.42 + 0.87) respectively. The occurrence distribution and quality of these features on the adaxial and abaxial epidermal surfaces of Hibiscus sabdariffa gave an insight to the variation and similarities that exist in Hibiscus sabdariffa. The results obtained in this study could be used as diagnostic tool for plant identification and preparation of monograph on the species.
