Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the effects of digital libraries on the research activities of students at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State. The study aims to assess the extent of digital library utilization, its impact on research quality and efficiency, the challenges faced by students in accessing digital libraries, and possible strategies for improvement. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with a population of 3,500 undergraduate students from various faculties. Using a simple random sampling technique, a sample size of 350 students was selected. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistical tools, including frequency tables and percentages. The findings revealed that a majority of students frequently use digital libraries for academic research, citing their ability to provide quick and comprehensive access to scholarly materials. The study also found that digital libraries significantly enhance research quality by offering credible and up-to-date sources. However, challenges such as slow internet connections, limited access to computers, and inadequate digital literacy skills hinder full utilization. Students with higher digital literacy skills were more efficient in navigating digital resources, highlighting the need for digital competency training. The study concludes that digital libraries are essential tools for improving students’ research efficiency and academic performance. However, their full potential is yet to be realized due to infrastructural and educational constraints. To enhance the effectiveness of digital libraries, the study recommends that the university invest in better digital infrastructure, provide digital literacy training, expand the range of accessible academic resources, and create awareness campaigns to encourage usage. Strengthening these areas will ensure that digital libraries remain a vital component of academic research and learning.
