THE ROLE OF DELTA BROADCASTING SERVICES (DBS) RADIO IN PROMOTING HEALTH AWARENESS IN ASABA, DELTA STATE
Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) Radio in promoting health awareness among residents of Delta State, Nigeria. Specifically, it explored the relationship between the frequency of DBS health broadcasts and public awareness, the influence of public perception on trust in DBS health programs, the impact of listening frequency on behavioral change, and how various challenges affect the effectiveness of these broadcasts. The researcher employed a survey design, with data collected from 250 respondents through structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests of independence. Findings reveal statistically significant relationships between the frequency of broadcasts and awareness levels, public perception and trust, listening frequency and behavioral change, and between challenges and program effectiveness. The study concludes that DBS Radio plays a crucial role in public health communication in Delta State, though its impact is influenced by signal quality, broadcast timing, and language accessibility. It recommended increased broadcast frequency, improved infrastructure, multilingual programming, and greater interactivity to enhance health outcomes through radio.
