Abstract

This research work was aimed at assessing the Sanitation Practices and Diarrhoeal Diseases in Obudu Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria. The research design used for this study was the descriptive survey design. To direct this study, three objectives were stated to include determining the; relationship between improper refuse disposal and diarrheal diseases in Obudu Local Government Area, Cross River State; relationship between inadequate hand washing and diarrheal diseases in Obudu Local Government Area, Cross River State and relationship between open defecation and diarrheal diseases in Obudu Local Government Area, Cross River State and three corresponding research questions and hypotheses were formulated. Related literature to the study were reviewed. Descriptive survey design was used for the study. A total of two hundred and forty (240) respondents were sampled. A self structured and validated questionnaire was the major instrument for data collection. Test retest method was adopted in establishing the reliability coefficient of 0.99 using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Data collected were analyzed using frequencies, percentage and inferential statistics of chi-square. The study revealed that inadequate refuse disposal, inadequate hand washing and open defecation has resulted in diarrheal diseases as well as general environmental deterioration which affects the quality of life and environment of people living around the locality. The research recommends that both individuals and waste management agencies should always embark on environmental sanitation and awareness on the dangers of improper dumping of refuse on the environment as well as their health. There should be provision of bigger waste bins and regular evacuation of the disposed waste to prevent adverse effect, and that waste bin should be located close to the residents or households to encourage the use of waste bins.
