Abstract

This study titled “Gender and Politics: A Case Study of Women Participation in Politics in DutsinMa Local Government Area of Katsina State during the Fourth Republic” investigates the extent, challenges, and prospects of women's involvement in political processes within the context of the Fourth Republic. Anchored on the Gender Role Theory, the study employed a descriptive survey research method and utilized a structured questionnaire administered to 150 respondents selected across the local government area. Findings reveal that although a significant majority (70%) of the respondents were aware of their political rights and the importance of political engagement, only 40% actively participated in political activities such as voting, attending rallies, or belonging to political parties. Cultural norms and traditional beliefs emerged as major barriers to women's political involvement, as reported by 60% of the respondents. Financial constraints (50%), lack of education (45%), and gender discrimination (55%) were also identified as key obstacles to effective participation. Despite these challenges, the study found that 30% of respondents were involved in advocacy groups championing women’s rights, 40% engaged in community development initiatives, and 20% had influenced local policymaking through forums like town hall meetings. Additionally, 35% reported receiving support from NGOs, 25% benefited from government empowerment programs, and 20% participated in political literacy and leadership training initiatives. The study concludes that while political awareness among women in DutsinMa is relatively high, their active participation remains hindered by socio-cultural, economic, educational, and institutional barriers. Nevertheless, women's contributions to advocacy and local development demonstrate their potential as key political stakeholders. The study recommends the implementation of political education programs, economic empowerment schemes, cultural
