THE ROLE OF NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (NGOS) ON POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN ANKPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KOGI STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in poverty alleviation in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State, using Social Capital Theory as the theoretical framework. The objectives were to assess the effectiveness of NGO-led poverty alleviation interventions, identify the challenges faced by NGOs in implementation, and explore the strategies employed by NGOs in addressing poverty in the area. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, and data were obtained from a total of 342 respondents.
Findings revealed that NGO interventions have a significant impact on poverty alleviation in Ankpa LGA. Specifically, the first hypothesis which stated that NGO-led poverty alleviation initiatives do not have a significant effect on poverty reduction in the area was rejected, while the alternative was accepted. Similarly, the second hypothesis that there are no challenges faced by NGOs in implementing poverty alleviation interventions was also rejected, confirming the presence of notable challenges. These include funding limitations, poor infrastructure, lack of government support, and limited community participation. The third hypothesis, which stated that NGOs do not employ effective strategies to address poverty in Ankpa LGA, was rejected, indicating that NGOs actively use strategies such as skills acquisition programs, community sensitization, and micro-credit schemes. Furthermore, the findings suggest that effective collaboration between NGOs, government agencies, and local communities enhances the success of poverty alleviation programs. Sustainability of interventions depends on community involvement, leadership development, and long-term planning. Based on the findings, the study recommends that NGOs should deepen community engagement, enhance capacity-building, and seek broader support from both public and private sectors to improve and sustain poverty alleviation outcomes in Ankpa Local Government Area.
