Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of Nigella sativa aqueous extract on lipid profile which was evaluated by total cholesterol and triglycerides. In this study, eight (8) male albino rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (2 each). The control group were fed orally with black seed aqueous extract a n d 0.1mg/kg, 0.2mg/kg and 0.25mg/kg for group 2, 3 and 4 respectively. At the end of fourteen days the rats were sacrificed and their blood samples were collected through cardiac puncture. Statistical analysis were done through one-way anova using SPSS. The results reveled that there was no significant difference (p0.05) in total cholesterol and triglycerides in treated groups when compared to the control group. There was a significant reduction (p0.05) in the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in group four animals when compared to the control. This results suggests that blabhck seed Nigella sativa has a favorable effect on lipid profile and seemed potential target for the treatment of hyperlipidemic condition.
