DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE SYSTEM
Abstract
This project presents the design, simulation, and implementation of an 800W Vertical
Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) optimized for decentralized power generation. The H
Rotor configuration was selected for its aerodynamic efficiency and omni-directional
capability in turbulent urban environments. Using QBlade simulation software, the
rotor was sized with a diameter of 1.70 m and a blade height of 1.95 m, resulting in a
swept area of 3.315 m^2 . The mechanical design integrates a Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Generator (PMSG) and a 2:1 chain transmission system to achieve the
target 800W output at a rated wind speed of 11.0 m/s. The prototype was fabricated
using locally sourced mild steel and galvanized sheet metal. Performance analysis
established a cut-in wind speed of 3.5 m/s, with reliable active generation observed
between 10:00 and 17:00 hours in Ede, Osun State. Simulation results revealed a
critical torque limitation below 3.0 m/s, where output remained under 1.0 W. The
study confirms the viability of locally manufactured VAWTs for off-grid applications,
recommending hybrid drag-based rotors to improve low-speed startup performance.
