Abstract

This study investigated the influence of digital media technology on student engagement and learning outcomes at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye. The objectives were to examine how digital tools shape students’ participation in learning activities, assess their impact on academic performance, and evaluate their role in facilitating communication between students and lecturers. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with data collected from 349 students and 6 lecturers across the Faculty of Arts using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that digital media technology has a strong positive influence on student engagement, making learning more interactive, improving understanding, and increasing participation in class activities. The study also found that digital tools enhance academic performance by providing easier access to learning materials and boosting student motivation, while facilitating quicker and more effective communication between students and lecturers. Despite these benefits, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, unstable power supply, limited access to devices, and low digital literacy among some users were identified, which can limit the full potential of digital learning. Based on these findings, the study recommends improving digital infrastructure, providing more training for both staff and students, and integrating digital tools more effectively into teaching to maximize engagement and learning outcomes.
