A STUDY OF THE TRADE IMBALANCE BETWEEN NIGERIA AND CHINA (2009-2019).
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The period from 2009 to 2019 saw a surge in trade between Nigeria and China, making them significant economic partners. China's strong demand for Nigerian oil, coupled with its ability to produce a wide range of affordable goods, fueled this growth. While this relationship brought benefits like infrastructure development, job creation, and access to affordable goods, it also presented challenges.Nigeria's heavy reliance on oil exports led to a significant trade imbalance, as imports from China far exceeded exports. This drained foreign exchange reserves and put pressure on the Nigerian currency. The influx of cheap Chinese goods also stifled the growth of local industries, leading to factory closures and job losses. This hindered Nigeria's industrialization and limited its economic diversification. Concerns also arose regarding the quality and safety of many Chinese imports entering the Nigerian market. To navigate these complexities, Nigeria needs to diversify its exports, promote local production, and implement effective trade policies to ensure a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship with China. This could involve measures such as promoting local manufacturing through incentives and supporting the development of strategic industries.
