Abstract

Sustainable infrastructure development has become a critical priority in addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges associated with rapid urbanization. Quantity surveyors play a vital role in achieving sustainability in infrastructure projects through effective cost management, resource optimization, and value-driven decision-making. This study examines the role of quantity surveyors in promoting sustainable infrastructure development, using the Ministry of Works, Kano State, as a case study. The research investigates how quantity surveyors contribute to sustainable practices during the planning, design, procurement, and construction stages of infrastructure projects. Data for the study were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and review of relevant documents within the Ministry. The findings reveal that quantity surveyors significantly influence sustainable outcomes by ensuring cost efficiency, minimizing material waste, promoting life-cycle costing, and advising on the use of sustainable materials and construction methods. However, challenges such as limited awareness of sustainability principles, inadequate training, and budgetary constraints were identified as barriers to effective implementation. The study concludes that strengthening the capacity of quantity surveyors and integrating sustainability principles into public infrastructure policies will enhance sustainable infrastructure delivery in Kano State. Recommendations are made to improve professional training and institutional support for quantity surveyors in sustainable development initiatives.
