Abstract

ABSTRACT This research examines the effect of Boko Haram insurgency on food security in Borno State, with specific focus on Gubio Local Government Area. The insurgency, which began in 2009, has displaced millions, destroyed farmlands, and disrupted local economies, thereby threatening food availability and access. This study employed a mixed-method approach involving structured questionnaires administered to 120 farming households and interviews with key informants such as agricultural officers, community leaders, and market traders. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Findings revealed that Boko Haram insurgency significantly reduced agricultural production by causing farmland abandonment, loss of farm inputs, and destruction of crops. Households faced rising food prices, reduced dietary diversity, and dependence on food aid. The study concludes that the insurgency has had a profound negative impact on food security in Gubio LGA. It recommends improving security in farming communities, restoring agricultural livelihoods through seed and input support, rebuilding market infrastructure, and integrating food security interventions with peace building strategies.
