DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ON SPOUSE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS IN AKOKO SOUTH WEST ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the impact of domestic violence on spouse family relationships in Akoko South West, Ondo State, Nigeria. Domestic violence, encompassing physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, has become a pervasive issue, deeply affecting the structure and stability of families. The research explores how violent behavior between spouses disrupts familial bonds, impacts the well-being of children, and strains extended family relations. Using a mixed-methods approach, including surveys and in-depth interviews, the study analyzes the social, economic, and psychological consequences of domestic violence on both victims and perpetrators within the family unit. Findings suggest that domestic violence not only deteriorates intimate partner relationships but also extends to family-wide dysfunction, eroding trust, communication, and social support systems. This research highlights the urgent need for community-based interventions, legal reforms, and counseling services to mitigate the adverse effects on families and promote healthier domestic environments.
