DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF DIGITAL TACHOMETER
Abstract
The need for precise motor speed measurement cannot be overstated. It is necessary for effective and efficient engineering systems. However, analog speed measuring instruments have failed to offer the required precision. This calls for an intelligent system capable of offering high-precision motor speed measurement. In this project, a digital tachometer with a 16*2 LCD display was constructed using ATMEGA328 Microcontroller coupled with an infrared sensor (i.e. transmitter and receiver) which served as the speed sensor. The signal sent from the sensor was transmitted and the received signal was translated to corresponding RPM equivalent. This received signal is sent to the crystal oscillator which sets clocking for the microcontroller that serves as the brain of the tachometer. The received signal of the microcontroller from the crystal oscillator is then displayed on the liquid crystal display (LCD) which is easy to read. The designed and constructed digital tachometer when tested, gave a better performance when compared to analog tachometer.
