THE ROLE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS IN THE PROTECTION AND PROMOTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
The need for a civilized society gave birth to the recognition of human rights. Thus, the concept of human rights is as old as civilization. The set of responsibilities carried out by the human rights organizations for the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria has increased in momentum and yielded result by awakening the consciousness of citizens of their human rights, resulting in achieving equality and peaceful co-existence. This, they have accomplished by advocating and ensuring the education of human rights in primary schools all over Nigeria. Advocacy and public awareness activities, monitoring and reporting of human rights abuses, and legal representation and support for victims of human rights violations carried out by human rights organizations in Nigeria will be re-examined. The paper also explored the challenges and limitations faced by human rights organizations in Nigeria, including government interference and intimidation, funding and resource constraints, torture of human rights defenders which has resulted into a slack off in their activities. The paper concludes by highlighting the significance of human rights organizations in Nigeria and the need for a stronger legal framework. It is recommended that to strengthen the role of human rights organizations in Nigeria, attention should be on funding, stronger legal protections, and greater public awareness of human rights issues.
