THE INFLUENCE OF CINEMATOGRAPHY ON AUDIENCE PERCEPTION OF NOLLYWOOD IN PORT HARCOURT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates The Influence of Cinematographic Innovations on Audience Perception of Nollywood Movies in Port Harcourt. Nollywood has experienced rapid technological transformation in recent years, including the adoption of high-definition (HD/4K) cameras, drone cinematography, computer-generated imagery (CGI), and advanced editing techniques. These innovations have improved the visual quality of films, yet concerns remain about inconsistent execution, limited accessibility, and whether they complement or overshadow storytelling, which remains Nollywood’s cultural foundation. The study employed a descriptive survey design and purposive sampling to target professionals and semi-professionals such as cinematographers, directors, editors, producers, VFX artists, and film students. Out of 222 questionnaires distributed, 200 were retrieved, yielding a 90% response rate. Data collection combined structured Likert-scale items with open-ended questions, and analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and thematic review. Findings revealed broad acknowledgment of improved visual quality, with respondents crediting HD/4K cameras, better lighting, and drone cinematography as major contributors to Nollywood’s enhanced aesthetics. Editing and postproduction were also recognized as central to refining professionalism. However, CGI received mixed evaluations, with many respondents highlighting inconsistent quality due to budget and technical limitations. Open-ended responses emphasized lighting, color grading, and camera work as the most influential aspects of cinematography, while key challenges included limited budgets, gaps in technical skills, weak CGI execution, and restricted access to modern postproduction facilities. The study concludes that cinematographic innovations have significantly boosted Nollywood’s image and global competitiveness but stresses the importance of balancing technical sophistication with strong storytelling. It recommends sustained investment in training, funding, and infrastructure to consolidate progress and secure Nollywood’s long-term growth.
