Abstract

ABSTRACT This research examined the relationship between unemployment, poverty, and crime rate in Damaturu Metropolitan, Yobe State. The study was prompted by the increasing rate of criminal activities such as theft, drug abuse, and youth violence, which are often linked to rising unemployment and poverty in the area.A quantitative research design was adopted. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to a total of 157 respondents selected from different wards in Damaturu Metropolitan. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).The findings revealed a strong positive relationship between unemployment, poverty, and crime rate. The results showed that individuals who are unemployed or living in poverty are more likely to engage in criminal acts such as theft, drug-related offenses, and social disorder. The study further indicated that economic hardship, lack of job opportunities, and peer pressure are significant factors influencing crime in the study area. The research concludes that reducing unemployment and alleviating poverty are essential measures in curbing the rising crime rate in Damaturu. It recommends that government and stakeholders should implement job creation programs, youth empowerment schemes, and skill acquisition initiatives to improve the living standards of residents and promote peace and stability in the community. Keywords: Unemployment, Poverty, Crime Rate, Youth, Damaturu, Economic Conditions
