ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIA ON CURRENCY NOTES IN CIRCULATION IN NIGERIA.
Abstract
Money plays a vital and indispensable role in human society as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, a unit of account, and a store of wealth. It is an essential tool for trade, enabling individuals and nations to engage in the exchange of goods and services. Despite its economic importance, money is also one of the most frequently handled items globally, constantly passing from one person to another, across diverse environments and conditions. To isolate and identify bacteria on paper currency denominations in circulation and to isolate and identify bacteria on polymer (leather) currency denominations in circulation also to compare bacterial species isolated from paper and polymer currency denominations in circulation is way essential. The findings of this study clearly demonstrated that currency notes in circulation in Nigeria harbor various pathogenic and opportunistic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiellapneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The high prevalence of those enteric and skin-associated bacteria indicates poor hygiene practices and frequent handling of currency notes. Consequently, currency notes represent a potential public health hazard and may contribute to the transmission of infectious diseases within the community. Therefore, remedial action is way imperative to overcome transmission of those pathogens among the population
