Abstract

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effects of dietary inclusion of sundried pawpaw leaf meal on the (PLM) on the qualitative characteristic and proximate composition of broilers chicken beast muscles. Ninety broilers were randomly assigned to three dietary treatment: 0g/kg PLM (control), 1g/kg PLM and 5g/kg PLM. After the 56-day feeding trial, three birds were randomly selected, weighed, slaughtered and dissected. The breast muscles were excised, deboned and kept at chilling temperature (7 °C) prior to analyses. Carcass quality parameters, including cold shortening water-holding capacity (WHC) and proximate composition. Results showed that the percentage weight of cold-shortened breast muscles was significantly influenced (P < 0.05) among dietary treatments. Water-holding capacity values were not influenced (P > 0.05) by the dietary treatments, while TBARS values were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) as the level of PLM inclusion increased. The results of the proximate composition revealed that moisture content was significantly reduced (P < 0.05) in treatments 2 and 3 compared with the control. But dietary treatment didn’t influenced (P > 0.05) crude protein, ether extract ash and carbohydrates but varied numerically. These findings support the use of PLM as a natural feed additive for improving broiler chicken meats quality and maintaining desirable nutritional attributes.
