Abstract

The increasing emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens underscores the urgent need for novel antibacterial agents, particularly from natural sources. This study investigates the antibacterial properties of Ficus platyphylla stem bark, a medicinal plant widely used in traditional African medicine. The research involved the extraction, isolation, and characterization of bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial activity. The extracts were screened against selected bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Results revealed significant antibacterial activity in certain fractions of the extract, which were further analyzed using spectroscopic methods to identify functional groups such as carboxylic acids, ketones, and aromatics associated with antibacterial properties. These findings scientifically validate the traditional use of Ficus platyphylla in treating infections and highlight its potential for developing new antibacterial agents. The study provides a promising foundation for further pharmaceutical exploration and development of plant-based antimicrobial products.
