Abstract

This study investigates the role of local government in rural development, using Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria, as a case study for the period 2015–2024. The main objective is to assess how the council has contributed to grassroots development during this period. Guided by Decentralization Theory, the research adopted a descriptive survey design and collected data through structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and relevant government records. Findings indicate modest achievements in road construction, basic education, and limited poverty-alleviation programmes, but weak performance in healthcare delivery, agricultural support, and participatory governance. Major challenges include inadequate funding, corruption, and political interference through the State/Local Government Joint Account. The study recommends strengthening financial autonomy, improving transparency and accountability, and expanding community participation to promote sustainable rural development.
