CHARACTERISATION OF BIO-CHAR FROM CO-PYROLYSIS OF GMELINA ARBOREA AND PARKIA BIGLOBOSA IN A FIXED BED REACTOR
Abstract
The increasing need for sustainable energy sources and effective waste
management solutions has driven significant interest in the production of biochar
through biomass pyrolysis. This research proposal focuses on the characterization of
biochar produced from the co-pyrolysis of Gmelina arborea and Parkia biglobosa using
a fixed bed reactor. The primary objective is to investigate the synergistic effects of
these two biomass feedstocks to optimize the yield and enhance the fuel properties of
the resulting biochar. By conducting systematic experiments, the study aims to provide
valuable insights into the potential of mixed biomass co-pyrolysis for biochar
production.
The experimental procedure involves meticulous preparation of the feedstocks,
followed by their co-pyrolysis in a fixed bed reactor under controlled conditions. Post-
pyrolysis, the resulting biochar will undergo comprehensive characterization using
various standard techniques. Parameters such as moisture content, volatile matter, fixed
carbon, ash content, elemental composition, higher heating value (HHV), thermal
stability, and chemical functional groups will be analyzed. Techniques like proximate
and ultimate analysis will be employed to evaluate these properties, ensuring a thorough
understanding of the biochar’s characteristics.
