IMPACT OF LEADERSHIP STYLE ON PRODUCTIVITY
Abstract
Leadership is one of the central factors of organizational success. This means that the leadership style defines the channels within which people are influenced and encouraged to achieve specific goals. The current question is how leadership styles affect productivity, and the focus is on six most common archetypes, namely transformational, transactional, autocratic, charismatic, bureaucratic, and democratic. The analysis provides the information related to these styles. Democratic, transformational, bureaucratic and autocratic leadership styles have been observed to have a positive effect on the performance of an organisation, whilst charismatic and transactional leadership styles are found to have a negative effect, arguably because of the lack of autonomy given to the employees. There was a combination of both primary and secondary research. Primary data collection was done using a quantitative survey instrument, and secondary data collection was carried out using an extensive literature review. Results show that the leadership styles of charismatic, bureaucratic, and transactional are negatively related to organizational performance, and the transformational, autocratic, and democratic styles have positive relationships. It is advisable that organisations should use the type of leadership that supplements the skills of their employees.
