Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted to carry out comparative analysis of maggot production using different animals dungs (poultry dropping, goat and cow dungs). Research has shown that maggots can be a good and suitable substitute for soybeans and fishmeal, which are core ingredients in animal feed.Maggots can be used to feed fish, poultry and other animals. It has therefore become imperative to find which animal dungs produces more maggots than the other. This study envisioned to determine which animal dung produces more maggot from plastic container method, and also evaluate the cost of producing maggot using different animals’ dungs. The methodology used in this study is firsthand information collected for the first time by the researcher which involved measuring all the substrates 15kg each and put in to a separate plastic container cloth (plastic container) and 10 litre of water was added until they were sufficiently moist to attract the flies. This was done in garden. Descriptive statistics and Excel 2010 were used as a statistical tool to determine the production efficiency of maggot production using plastic container method of different animal dungs (cow dung, poultry dropping, and goat dung). The end result achieved in this study shows that goat dungs has the highest productivity with 53kg fresh weight, 21kg dry weight and furthermore, it was found out that plastic container method cannot be effectively used as an alternative cost reduction method of maggot production. It was concluded that Goat dungs produced more maggot however, tend to be relatively expensive, while poultry droppings offer a more cost-effective alternative. Cow dung, as stated in this study. It is recommended that to producer should prioritize gout dungs when the goal is to maximize output.
