INFLUENCE OF MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ MOTIVATION ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ INTEREST AND ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKURDI LOCAL GOVERNMNET AREA OF BENUE STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the influence of mathematics teachers' motivation on students' interest and
academic achievement in senior secondary schools within Makurdi Local Government Area,
Benue State. Given the critical role of mathematics in students' educational development,
understanding how teacher motivation impacts student outcomes is essential for improving
academic performance. The study employed a descriptive survey research design, involving 125
participants, including mathematics teachers and students from selected senior secondary schools
in the area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires tailored to assess teacher
motivation levels, student interest in mathematics, and academic achievement. Findings indicate
a significant positive relationship between teacher motivation and students' interest and
performance in mathematics. Motivated teachers were more likely to employ engaging
instructional strategies, foster positive classroom environments, and provide additional support,
which led to increased student interest and higher academic achievement. However, the study also
revealed several factors negatively affecting teacher motivation, such as irregular salary
payments, lack of resources, limited professional development opportunities, and insufficient
administrative support. These challenges reduced teacher enthusiasm and effectiveness,
consequently impacting student outcomes. The study concludes that enhancing teacher motivation
is essential for improving students' engagement and success in mathematics. Recommendations
include timely salary payments, improved working conditions, increased professional development
opportunities, and the introduction of recognition programs to foster a supportive work
environment for teachers. These initiatives could help build a motivated, effective teaching
workforce capable of inspiring students and achieving higher academic standards in mathematics.
