PHYTOCHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND IN-VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF ETHANOL EXTRACTS OF JIMSONWEED (DATURA STRAMONIUM) LEAVES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and biological activities of the
ethanol extract from Datura stramonium leaves. Historically, Datura stramonium has
been utilized as remedies, culinary enhancement and posses control against some
bacterial pathogens; however, comprehensive determination and standardization of
its bioactive compounds are lacking. The research aimed to analyze the
phytochemical profile using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and
assess the antioxidant and antibacterial potentials of the ethanol leaf extract. The
crude extract yielded 2.12%. Qualitative phytochemical screening revealed the
presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids. Quantitative
analysis demonstrated significant amounts of alkaloids (37.48±0.12 mg/100g),
flavonoids (31.61±0.50 mg/100g), saponins (44.01±0.17 mg/100g), and terpenoids
(39.47±0.14 mg/100g). Furthermore, the ethanol crude extract exhibited considerable
antimicrobial activity, showing higher inhibition effects against S. agalactiae, S.
aureus, and K. pneumoniae. These findings support the traditional uses of Datura
stramonium and suggest its potential as a source for novel therapeutic agents.
