Abstract

This study investigates the influence of management competence on employee performance within selected Nigerian banks. A total of 90 responses were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Key variables examined include timely decision-making, leadership influence, communication, and work environment. Findings show that 55.6% of respondents were male, and most were within the 26–35 age bracket, indicating a youthful workforce. B.Sc/HND holders formed the majority of the sample, revealing a well-educated group. Descriptive statistics indicate strong agreement among employees regarding the positive role of management in enhancing performance. Correlation analysis revealed a strong relationship between timely decisions and leadership influence (r = 0.55), while regression results confirmed that all management factors significantly impact employee performance. Timely decisions (p = 0.009), leadership (p = 0.025), communication (p = 0.038), and work environment (p = 0.012) were all statistically significant predictors. Leadership and a conducive environment emerged as the most influential factors. Communication, though important, had a relatively lower effect. The study concludes that enhancing managerial competence is crucial for improving workforce productivity and satisfaction. Effective leadership, timely decisions, and supportive environments are essential for sustaining high employee performance. These insights have significant implications for organizational management and human resource development.
