Abstract

This study examines the disaster management strategies employed by the Yobe State University Fire Services Unit in mitigating fire disasters on campus. It aims to assess the preparedness, response mechanisms, and effectiveness of preventive measures put in place to reduce the occurrence and impact of fire outbreaks within the university environment. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, and data were collected from staff and students through structured questionnaires. The findings reveal that while the university’s fire service unit has made significant efforts in fire prevention and emergency response, challenges such as inadequate firefighting equipment, insufficient personnel, and lack of regular training hinder optimal performance. The study also finds that awareness and preparedness among staff and students are relatively low, thereby increasing vulnerability to fire incidents. It concludes that effective fire disaster management requires a combination of proactive measures, such as continuous training, regular maintenance of equipment, adequate funding, and strong institutional support. The study recommends the establishment of periodic fire drills, increased investment in modern firefighting technologies, and the inclusion of fire safety education in the university’s orientation programs. These steps will enhance the university’s resilience and ensure a safer learning environment.
