Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis focused on the rather convoluted relationship that exists between Labour Law in Nigeria on the one hand and the suppositional safeguarding of the interests of vulnerable persons in the workforce, on the other hand. The structure of labour law in Nigeria, on the mere surface, has as one of its key objectives, the protection of the welfare and overall interests of vulnerable persons which may include but is not limited to: children, migrant workers, women in certain industries and people living with impairments. However, a careful and meticulous evaluation of this provision accentuates a possible illusion. The research revealed the dissociation that exists between the statutory provisions and the feasibility of it being implemented. This is achieved with a critical review of legislation. This research not only identified the dissociation between the statutory provisions and its opposing reality, it also proposed a fix, some sort of reform to bridge this gap, ultimately ensuring that the providence of labour law in Nigeria does not just exist as a veneer but is proficient in its implementation in the safeguarding of the rights and interests of vulnerable persons within the Nigerian Labour terrain. This study used both primary and secondary sources of data. The study applied the doctrinal method using primary and secondary sources of law, like the labour act and the Universal Declaration of Human Right. The thesis is built on the vulnerability theory as its theoretical framework.
