THE EFFECTS OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ON REFERENCE SERVICES AT KASHIM IBRAHIM LIBRARY, AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effects of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on
reference services at Kashim Ibrahim Library, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The study focuses
on identifying the ICT facilities available, assessing the skills required by library staff, evaluating
the effectiveness of ICT in reference services, and exploring the challenges faced in their usage.
A qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews was adopted, with two reference
librarians participating. Findings reveal that while ICT tools like OPAC, digital databases, and
computers are available and have improved efficiency and access to information, several
challenges persist, including unstable power supply, limited training, and resistance to change. The
study concludes that although ICT has positively impacted reference services, full benefits require
increased investment, staff capacity building, and better user orientation. Recommendations
include consistent staff training, infrastructure improvement, and promoting digital literacy among
users.
