Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of urbanization on agricultural land in Igala Land, Kogi State, Nigeria. Rapid population growth, infrastructural development, and expansion of settlements have led to the continuous conversion of fertile farmlands into residential, commercial, and industrial uses. This land use change has significantly reduced the availability of arable land, thereby affecting agricultural productivity and threatening food security in the region. The study highlights how urban expansion has altered traditional farming systems and displaced rural farming communities, leading to changes in livelihoods and increased dependence on non-agricultural income sources. It also identifies key drivers of urbanization such as economic opportunities, improved transportation networks, and rural-urban migration. The paper concludes that without proper land use planning and sustainable development policies, the ongoing urban growth in Igala Land will continue to negatively affect agricultural sustainability and rural development.
