KNOWLEDGE AND ACCEPTABILITY OF DIPHTHERIA IMMUNIZATION AMONG RESIDENTS OF BUNKURE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KANO STATE
Abstract
Diphtheria remains a significant public health concern globally, particularly in developing countries where immunization coverage is suboptimal. In Nigeria, sporadic outbreaks have highlighted the need for improved vaccination strategies and awareness. Understanding the knowledge and acceptability of diphtheria immunization among residents is essential for effective intervention. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and acceptability of diphtheria immunization among residents of Bunkure Local Government Area, Kano State. A Descriptive Cross-sectional study design was carried out using probability sampling technique specifically a multistage sampling technique from February to May, 2025. The targeted population of the study is about 284,251 which comprised of the male and female (fathers and mothers) in Bunkure LGA. Data were collected through both online and physical distribution of questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 with the results presented in frequency tables, and percentages, and descriptive statistics was used to describe the categorical study and outcome variables. Majority (38.7%) of the respondents are within the age range of 22-25 years. Most of whom were females (75.1%). Most of the respondents are Muslims (80.1%) and belong to Hausa/Fulani (73.8%) ethnic group. The findings revealed varying levels of knowledge among the residents regarding diphtheria and its immunization. While significant proportion demonstrated awareness of the disease and its preventive measures, gaps in complete understanding were evident. Acceptability of the diphtheria vaccine was generally high, though certain misconceptions and concerns about vaccine safety and efficacy persisted among some segments of the population. It is therefore concluded that there is moderate knowledge and acceptability of diphtheria immunization among residents of Bunkure Local Government Area, Kano state, and this warranted special attention. It is therefore recommended that government especially the Local Government authorities should embark on more immunization campaigns to enhance the knowledge and awareness of the public on the diphtheria and its preventable vaccines.
