A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CONVENTIONAL AND NON-CONVENTIONAL BANKS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study evaluates the determinant factors that significantly influence the financial performance of conventional and non-conventional banks in Nigeria. Pooled OLS panel regression analysis was employed as the technique of estimation to assess the annual data of four banks generated from banks' annual reports and financial statements for a period of five years from 2016 to 2020. The dependent variable was return on asset while the independent variables were leverage ratio, gross domestic product growth, inflation and bank size. The findings of the study indicate that bank size and leverage ratio have a significant positive effect on both conventional and non-conventional banks in Nigeria. This study concludes that bank size and leverage ratio are the major determinant factors that influence financial performance in Nigeria. The study suggests that Islamic bank should expand their office to other locations as it enhances their profitability.
