Abstract

This study investigates the energy consumption profile of the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) departmental building at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, with a focus on evaluating alternative power supply options to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. A mixed-method research approach was employed, integrating quantitative measurements of appliance usage and energy ratings with qualitative assessments of occupant behavior. Data were collected over an 8‐week period, and energy consumption was analyzed using manual recordings, Microsoft Excel, Python, and RETScreen simulation software. The research examines how physical building characteristics, plug load contributions, and human behavioral patterns influence overall energy usage, and it assesses potential retrofitting solutions and clean energy interventions. Ultimately, the study aims to provide data-driven recommendations for energy conservation, address the challenges posed by traditional energy sources, and contribute to the broader goals of sustainable development and reduced greenhouse gas emissions in educational institutions.
