ATTITUDE OF UNDERGRADUATE YOUTH TOWARD DEMOCRATIC VALUES: IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the perception of Nigerian undergraduate youths towards democratic values and the role of Social Studies in instilling these values. It aims to assess the extent to which youths have internalized democratic principles such as respect, tolerance, honesty, patriotism, transparency, and justice, and how these values influence their civic responsibilities. Using a survey research design, data were collected from 200 students in two universities in Kogi State through a structured questionnaire. Findings reveal that while most respondents are aware of key democratic values, there is a significant gap between their theoretical understanding and practical application in civic activities. The study concludes that although Social Studies has been effective in promoting democratic values, there is a need for more practical civic education initiatives to enhance the alignment between knowledge and behavior, thereby encouraging more active and responsible participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
