Abstract

ABSTRACT Flooding can potentially increase the contamination of boreholes, several water supply issuesexperienced by flood victims were identified such as contaminated water resources, scarcity ofsafe drinking water, flood-related disease outbreak and disruption ofwater treatment facilities.Hence, the management of water supply during the flood should be done efficiently andsystematically to ensure sufficient and safe water supply for flood victims. This study dealswiththe assessment of the physicochemical parameters of water samples from Mafoni during the period of September 2025 and compared with unaffected flood areas (Damboa road,Jiddari and Polo).Water Quality parameters suchasTemperature, Turbidity, TSS, Nitrates, Iron, Chloride,Fluoride and TDS. The results were obtained and compared with World HealthOrganization guidelines to assess compliance, revealed that most of the water quality parameters were not adequate to pronounce the water potable. Hence adequate water treatment processes should beemployed to make the water potable for consumption and other domestic uses. The scope of thestudy was limited to boreholes water within Maiduguri Metropolis, sampled across areascharacterized by varying population densities and land use practices. Findings revealed thatwhile PH and Turbidityvalues fellwithin acceptable limits, TDS and EC exceeded WHOrecommendation in Mafoni (location 1, location 2 and location 3). NVitrate and TSS concentrations were within permissible limits. The study recommends routine monitoring, improved boreholes construction standards and community sensitization on water treatment tosafeguard public health.
