Abstract

This study examined the implication of fraud on the performance of commercial banks in Nigeria, with particular reference to First Bank of Nigeria, Anyigba branch. Fraud has become one of the major challenges confronting the banking sector in Nigeria, leading to financial losses, reduced customer confidence, operational inefficiency, and threats to the stability of financial institutions. The study aimed to determine the causes of fraud in commercial banks, examine the various forms of fraudulent practices, and evaluate the effects of fraud on the performance and profitability of banks. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. Data for the study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were collected through the administration of questionnaires and oral interviews with staff members and customers of First Bank PLC, Anyigba, while secondary data were sourced from textbooks, journals, newspapers, annual reports, and relevant banking publications. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and tables for clarity and proper interpretation. Findings from the study revealed that fraud negatively affects the performance of commercial banks through loss of funds, reduction in profitability, decline in public confidence, and disruption of banking operations. The study further identified weak internal control systems, inadequate supervision, poor management practices, and technological vulnerabilities as major causes of fraud in banks. It was also discovered that fraud can hinder the growth and development of the banking industry and the economy at large if not properly controlled. Based on the findings, the study recommended that commercial banks should strengthen their internal control mechanisms, employ qualified and trustworthy personnel, adopt modern fraud detection technologies, and ensure regular auditing and staff training. The study concluded that effective fraud prevention and control measures are essential for improving the performance, stability, and public image of commercial banks in Nigeria.
