Abstract

The study investigate the comparative analysis of students' academic performance in biology and chemistry at senior secondary school level in funtua local government area, Katsina state. It has been observed that poor performance in the field of science such as biology and chemistry is caused by the poor quality of science teachers, overcrowded classrooms and lack of suitable and adequate science equipment among others. Students perform poorly in biology and chemistry because; the biology and chemistry classes are usually too large and heterogeneous in terms of ability level. The main objective of this study is to compare students' academic performance in biology and chemistry at senior secondary school level in Funtua local government area, Katsina state. In this study ex-post facto research design was adopted. The results for biology and chemistry for the First term 2022/2023 Session were collected and used as the data for the study. The population of this study comprises of four (4) selected public Secondary School in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State with a number of Two Thousand Six hundred and Twenty-Two (2,622) male students and 952 female Students with a total number of three thousand five hundred and seventy-four (3,574). Hence the used of ex-post facto as the research design for the study. The data collected for the study were analysed so as to answer the research questions raised and to test the null hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significance. Both the research questions and null hypotheses were analysed using Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC) Statistic. The result indicate there is significant relationship between the students' academic performance in Biology and chemistry at senior secondary school Level in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State. It also shows that there is significant relationship between the students' academic performance in Biology and chemistry at senior secondary school Level in Funtua Local Government Area, Katsina State It was concluded that Variations in the academic performance among students at all levels of education are one issue that has attracted the attention of many researchers across the globe. Different studies have reported various reasons to explain this cause. Similarly in the same line, this study was conducted to compare the academic performance of students in Biology and Chemistry.
